Imagine a law graduate, once arguing cases in the courtroom, trading his black coat for a farmer’s hat. That’s Ashok Gade, 72, from Yawal, Maharashtra. In 1990, after his father’s passing, life nudged him back to his family’s banana farm. Many would have seen this as a detour, but Ashok saw it as a canvas—a chance to paint a new story, one harvest at a time.
When Life Gives You Bananas…
Banana farming was no fairy tale. Every season was a gamble: producing a 15-kg bunch cost ₹150, yet markets offered as low as ₹1.25 per kg. Harvesting was laborious, shelf life short, and profits nearly vanished before the bananas left the farm.
It was the perfect storm to quit. But Ashok refused to bow to numbers on a market sheet. Instead of giving up, he asked a powerful question: “What if bananas could be more than bananas?”
Turning Obstacles into Golden Opportunities
That spark of curiosity turned into a revolution. Alongside his wife, Kusum, Ashok experimented—banana chips, laddus, jams, papads—and finally, the game-changer: patented banana biscuits.
What began as a struggling farm transformed into a premium business. His biscuits, fetching ₹400–₹500 per kilo, reached Delhi, Bengaluru, and beyond. From law to farming to entrepreneurship, Ashok rewrote the story of ageing and business.
At 72, he didn’t just save his farm—he reinvented it. And he didn’t stop there. By guiding 50+ farmers to follow his model, he proved that one senior’s dream can spark change across a whole community.
